Teresa Hurley -Biography
Combining fragments of memory or poems and the physical experience of being in particular places, these paintings are a visualisation of my interior and exterior worlds, synthesised – by means of colour and form – into images. They are a reflection of emotions and ideas based on re-imagined ancient myths but also on the real world (a landscape, object, face, animal or memory) that has intrigued me or lingered in my memory. They are also a response to sensations and deeper preoccupations to do with being and existence (time and finality) so certain motifs appear repeatedly, such as the pomegranate, the crow or jackdaw, the Horseshoe Arch of Andalusian architecture or the horse – often as archetype. Horses figure strongly in the work. their relationship with humans (Horse Whisperer and Encounter series) and the way they are often discarded, maltreated and slaughtered when they are no longer able to work (Blood Horses).
The Equus paintings, by contrast, allude to the Celtic myths of Epona – symbol of plentiful harvest and Guardian to the entrance to the Other world and to Etruscan horse figurines encountered many years ago in Italy. I use my photographs and/or sketches to remind me of places but also paint directly from memory (and imagination).
My background has been a combination of both Literature and Art, with influences from childhood years spent living in diverse countries (watching my father paint) and – as a young adult – visiting others. Aspects of these environments are reflected in my work though not always in an obvious way. The use of bright colours and strong contrasts of light and shade are found in Mexico City at high altitude, whilst the stylised horses reflect the formality of the Equestrian style in Southern Spain or the idiosyncratic Etruscan and Greek horses of antiquity.
